There are various types of wiring systems used in house wiring in the UK. Nowadays these are manufactured with either a PVC or Rubber insulating a copper conductor.
Over a period of time, this insulation can become worn and degraded and this can cause problems within the installation. For this reason BS7671 (17th edition wiring regulations) state that these wiring systems should be tested to ensure that it still conforms with the relevant regulations.
Although you may have a installation at your property that is wired in PVC type cable, it does not mean that it is safe or conforms and the only way to verify this, is to have it periodically tested.
